Problem Statement

According to a sample survey of over 200 Kansas and Missouri teenagers, teen driving under the

influence is largely due to avoidance of parental consequences for drinking alcohol.

Our Solution

Preventing teenage driving under the influence stems from educating parents on how to

approach the topic with their children.

My name is Natalie Stapp, and I am a senior at Notre Dame de Sion High School. I enrolled in the Designing Real World Impacts course because I was seeking educational skills directly applicable to professional environments. After eleven years of traditional primary education, I sought a challenge that compels me to analyze and propose practical solutions to real-world problems in hopes of improving the quality of our world. I was eager for a greater form of education. This course not only familiarized me with modern challenges and business tactics used to address them but also honed my abilities in pitching, professional writing, task management, and blending imaginative ideas with realism.

After brainstorming many possible topics to address, I was particularly drawn to the issue of drunk driving among teenagers. Witnessing firsthand the dangers and prevalence of this problem, I have long been committed to denormalizing this reckless behavior. Through data collection and analysis, I have applied my knowledge of statistics to draw meaningful conclusions and develop effective solutions. Our surveys revealed a gap between parents and teenagers regarding this issue, prompting us to specifically delve into the parent aspect of navigating teen decisions. We used our research and data to create a fact sheet and video aimed at guiding parents in initiating conversations with their children about the dangers of drunk driving, thus bridging the gap.

I am eager to witness the potential impact of these initiatives in shaping a safer future for our community.

LAURYN MURPHY

Communications Coordinator

Hey! I’m Lauryn Murphy, senior at Notre Dame de Sion High School. I chose to take Designing Real World Impacts to improve my speaking skills in a professional environment and seek opportunities that would be beneficial to my future business-oriented career. This class has added many valuable skills such as public speaking as well as professional formatted emails and other forms of communication to make me more prepared in a primarily adult setting. Taking this class has been academically and morally empowering, focusing on an issue this serious for such a long period of time has made me more aware in my everyday life.

One of the main reasons I wanted to focus on the aspect of driving under the influence of alcohol is because I believe it is 100% preventable. I felt passionate about narrowing down specifically on teens because I rarely hear people acknowledge the issue. It was really eye-opening to research possible reasons as to why drunk driving is such a prevalent issue in teens. What didn’t come to the forefront of our attention as a main cause until after several surveys was the attempt to avoid parental consequence. This brought us to further research the gap between parent communication as well as child perception of this discussion.

I am incredibly excited for the future of our projects and its impact to families around the world.

DEEDEE COHEN

Hello! My name is DeeDee Cohen and I am a senior at Notre Dame de Sion High School. I chose to enroll in Designing Real World Impacts because of the unique learning format. I was excited to learn more about businesses in our community and to gain skills from these experiences. One of the biggest impacts the class had was opening my eyes to new ideas and concepts. In addition this class has also prepared me for college and for a professional work environment.

In the class I chose to focus on the topic of teenage drinking and driving. Many teens face peer pressure at social gatherings. Some teens have never had a conversation about drinking with their parents. I think parents should always have a conversation with their children to convey that safety is a priority. I was very excited to learn more about ways to prevent tragedies when drinking and driving. Drunk driving in teens is a big problem and is seen at many social gatherings. I think drunk driving is very preventable and can save many lives. Having observed a Mothers Against Drunk Driving Victim Impact Panel, I was able to see firsthand how this organization can make a community impact through education.
