Problem Statement
There is a lack of quantifiable data to prove how important a free driver's education program is for youth.
Solution Statement
The numbers from a “pre-course” and “post-course” survey could be used to further prove that putting driver education back in high schools would benefit youths.

Meet Our Team

Hi! My name is Caroline Hammett and I am a senior at Notre Dame de Sion High School. I chose to take this course because of all the new and extremely important skills I knew I would learn. Taking a class that not only operates outside of the traditional classroom setting, but is also very student led which promotes self-discipline and fair contribution. This class has helped me overcome “phone anxiety”, create good habits, and learn how to problem solve with others.  Designing Real World Impacts gave me an opportunity to explore my several passions by creating a project. For example, I love driving. I love the freedom, blasting music, picking up friends, and the overall independence of it. I can't imagine not being able to drive or not even given the opportunity to choose to drive.  After a class visit to KCK PAL, I was immediately inspired and loved their mission. My group mates and I eagerly jumped at the opportunity to work with the program’s founder and leader, Matt Tomasic. He showed us, through real world experiences and stories, just how impactful and difficult it is for a person to thrive without a license or form of identification. Our society is a culmination of vicious cycles and we are working to break this one by one informing others about the true significance of driver education. Together, we created two forms for the students to fill out so that we can have quantifiable data that shows the impact of this course. This data will, hopefully, help to create real change in both our system and society.

Hi! My name is Marisa Smith. Currently, I am a senior at Notre Dame de Sion High School. Designing Real World Impacts has diversified my last year of highschool by helping me learn professional skills to help me form new friendships with my classmates. This class has connected me with my amazing teammates who have helped me through this project. Due to the non-traditional classroom setting this class provides, my definition of a classroom has been redefined. We partnered with KCK Pal with a focus in driver education. Before visiting PAL I wasn't aware about the challenges one may face when trying to obtain their license nor did I recognize how prevalent it is in society. Seeing the program's impact, we felt called to aid KCK Pals mission by enhancing their pre-course and post-course survey. We hoped to quantify the impact this program has on youth. These numbers can then be used to implement drivers education back into schools as well as raising awareness to this unrecognized issue.

Hello, I’m Hannah Lange and I am currently a senior at Notre Dame de Sion High School. I chose to enroll in Design Real World Impacts because I wanted a class that was different from your normal classroom setting. With little knowledge of what I was committing myself to, I was given the opportunity to work in a professional setting, work with a variety of people throughout the community, and create lifelong relationships that will later help me in the future.
After getting the opportunity to visit the KCK Police Athletic League alongside my classmates, I was instantly intrigued and moved by the mission their organization lives by. KCK PAL offers a variety of opportunities for kids and teenagers around the KC area to learn new skills and develop well-rounded relationships with police officers. My team and I were extremely inspired by one of their most popular courses, driver’s education. After reaching out to the founder of this organization, Matt Tomasic, we were informed about the issue at hand regarding the large number of unlicensed teenagers around Kansas City and immediately wanted to help. The amount of opportunities given to underprivileged teenagers to gain a form of ID or driver's license is almost 0. KCK PAL, however, offers a driver’s ed class to kids ages 15 and up for the chance to get a tangible ID at no cost. Our goal was to develop a viable way for their organization to gain data about the different lives of teens in the surrounding areas to not only help them gain identification, but to also spread awareness about the current problem to those who are uninformed about the issue. In the future we want to be able to increase the amount of programs that offer a driver’s education free of charge and create a change for teenagers around the United States
