Solution
We distributed a survey to the parents and students at Notre Dame de Sion High Schools to collect data then present our findings to the health department. They can then take this information and find a way to efficiently get teens vaccinated and correct misinformation.

ELyssa vallesMy dream has always been to become a nurse. When my grandma had to take weekly trips to the hospital, I would accompany her. As soon as I would step through the hospitals doors I would feel at home. I was always so interested in seeing what procedure they would perform on her whether it was simply drawing blood or something bigger. That was when I knew I had to become a nurse.
My biggest worry in the nursing/health care industry is the unfair treatment of minorities. I have seen this happen to family friends of mine who I love and worry about. A friend of my grandpa who is Mexican has diabetes. It is hard for him to communicate with his doctor to learn more about his disease. He asked my mom to help and interpret for him and my mom talked to his doctor and found out that they had been cheating him of a few things he didn’t know about. This made me really upset because I am very passionate about becoming a nurse and excited to help minorities receive the same great experience anglos do Another problem in the health care industry is the inability of customers to pay the full fee. My mom is a single mom who not only takes care of her two children but also takes care of my grandparents who can’t speak english. When I was in seventh grade my mom had to get last minute surgery and during the week she was in the hospital, my grandma wasn’t feeling well and had to go to the ER as well. My grandma passed away that week and my mom was drowned with many expenses. The surgery fee, taxes, the fees of my grandmas stay at the hospital, and so much more. My mom had so much stress and piling the fees on top of another, didn’t help. I would love to make a change and help people who can’t afford to pay so much wether they are minorities or not. I want to change the terrible treatment of people who have different colored skin than others. |
Kamryn mckibbenI’m Kamryn and I currently attend Notre Dame de Sion as a member of the class of 2022. I want to be a part of the change to ensure quality healthcare for everyone, because everyone deserves the same treatment no matter what race.
This project of creating equal care has become a passion of mine and something I look forward to changing. I want people to feel safe while in the hospital or at a doctor's office. The healthcare setting should not be a place where personal biases get in the way of quality healthcare. This is a topic that needs to be heard more by health care providers to ensure the same care for everyone. and needs to be changed fast before we lose more minorities to the health care system. This is also my main driving point on wanting to get into the healthcare field after college. A study from Association of American Medical Colleges showed that 5.0% of African Americans, 5.8% of hispanics and 56.2% of whites make up the healthcare field. I believe I can be a part of the change in the healthcare system. The patients have to trust the people there for them and with this inequality of care happening the trust is not there. I can be a part of putting trust back into the health care system not only by this project but by being in the healthcare world myself. |
